A Hand Quilted Gem
Last summer the guild had a huge collection of everything quilting from an estate in Nanaimo. As items were sorted, we came across a beautiful, cross-stitched flimsy that was layered and pinned – unfortunately for likely over 10 years. The pins were solidly rusted in place. It was decided to donate this to the Evergreen Hand quilters to be finished.
I struggled to remove the rusted-in safety pins and saw the residual rust. After some consultation, I purchased Retro Clean to remove this rust. I soaked it for two days and saw most but not all the rust disappear.
I proceeded to mark a large grid diagonally on the white spaces on the flimsy which is about 80” x 80”. In late November, 2024 we secured the backing, batting, and flimsy on our wooden frames.
It is now near completion of the hand quilting. I shall purchase a suitable binding fabric and finish it. It will be shown on a meeting night, October. It will be sold at the Filberg center where we volunteer and the proceeds will go to the Center and towards their senior programs.
