Celebrating Our Roots
The Origins of the Schoolhouse Quilters of the Comox Valley
Every thriving community begins with a spark — a simple idea, a few determined hearts, and the magic of shared passion.
For the Schoolhouse Quilters of the Comox Valley, that spark ignited in September 1985.
It all started when Carol Park placed an ad in the Green Sheet, the local Comox Valley Newspaper and posted flyers in local sewing shops. That outreach led to the very first meeting held at Kay Russell’s home. By the second meeting in Comox, Carol was named President. Though informal in those early days, enthusiasm was high and structure soon followed. Jenny Cooper secured a meeting room at Airport Elementary School, and Johanna Clarke stepped up to teach a sampler quilt class.
As word spread, the group blossomed. Sharon Blacklock introduced Fran Robinson, and Diane Beacham brought Betty Neufeld.
New friendships stitched themselves into the fabric of the club.
Soon, members were exploring techniques like samplers, fan quilts, and even Hawaiian quilting.
The first group project—a “very scrappy” fan quilt—was a true labour of love. Each member contributed at least two blocks, using patterns from Johanna’s sampler. It wasn’t just about creating a quilt; it was about creating connection.
As the club grew in skill and spirit, it needed a name that reflected its unique identity. Inspired by both tradition and creativity, a name was finally chosen: The Schoolhouse Quilters of the Comox Valley.

Nearly four decades later, our story continues to inspire.
From a single meeting in a cozy living room to a vibrant guild still stitching strong, the legacy of those early members reminds us of the power of community - and the beauty that happens when we come together, one stitch at a time.
“Call it a network, call it a tribe, call it a family. Whatever you call it, whoever you are, you need one.”
